Commercial Lending Officer

Position Summary:

The primary objective of the Commercial Loan Officer (CLO) is to assist the Commercial, Agricultural and REM Lending officers in providing services consistent with our service standards and superior to our competition. The CLO is to ensure that she or he understands our Loan Policy as it applies to the Consumer, Commercial, Ag and Real Estate lending function, and that the work is completed in a timely and accurate manner consistent with best practices and regulatory requirements. In addition, the CLO is to help develop Asset Liability Management goals, and to work to achieve them with the assistance of the Lending Team. The CLO may be asked to serve on other teams striving to achieve a “Better State of Banking.” This objective will be done within the context of Team Guidelines, Vision, Mission, and Core Values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Approve loans within specified limits and refer loan applications outside those limits to management for approval.
2. Meet with applicants to obtain information for loan applications and to answer questions about the process.
3. Analyze applicants' financial status, credit, and property evaluations to determine feasibility of granting loans.
4. Explain to customers the different types of loans and credit options that are available, as well as the terms of those services.
5. Obtain and compile copies of loan applicants' credit histories, corporate financial statements, and other financial information.
6. Review and update credit and loan files.
7. Review loan agreements to ensure that they are complete and accurate according to policy.
8. Compute payment schedules.
9. Stay abreast of new types of loans and other financial services and products to better meet customers' needs.
10. Submit applications to credit analysts for verification and recommendation.
11. Outreach and community education as it relates to banking.
12. Maintain familiarity with all bank products so referrals can be made to meet the needs of the customer.
13. Assist in Sales and Service projects in the Lending Department in a timely and effective manner.
14. Assist in identifying possible new products and complete research to underwrite them and present them to the Loan Committee/Asset Liability Committee or the Board as appropriate.
The position of Commercial Loan Officer is responsible for managing the Commercial Loan Portfolio. The CLO is to ensure that all matters of safety and soundness are addressed in the management of the Loan Portfolios, and asset quality trends are measured, monitored, managed, and controlled. Communication and reporting is to be maintained with the Senior Lender and Loan Committee.
15. The CLO is responsible to retain, develop and deepen customer relationships, and seek opportunities for loan portfolio growth.
16. The CLO is to provide guidance and support to other team members who are involved with the loan process to ensure adherence to Bank policies and regulations, including applicable laws, including ensuring adherence to EEO guidelines.
17. The CLO will provide guidance, help set standards for timeliness and accuracy and recommend education to the Senior Lender as appropriate for the Lending tech support.
18. Review lending policies to ensure new and renewing loans meet policy and guidance. Provide recommendations for amendments and additions to policy to the EVP of Lending.
19. Help develop an ongoing education and training plan that supports growth in knowledge and skills necessary to grow in the position.
20. Assist in managing the loan portfolio to minimize risk and loss including the identification and management of classified or watch listed loan relationships.
21. Assist in developing strategies and goals for growing the loan portfolio through new relationships and deepening existing relationships, in support of the growth of a strong and sound balance sheet and income statement for the Bank.
22. In line with Union State’s Service Standards, be willing to help with Bank Committees, internal projects, and community events alongside other Bank Team Members.
23. Other duties as assigned.

Lending Department Responsibilities:

1. Create an atmosphere within the organization that attains and maintains a high level of morale and embraces our Vision, Mission, Core Values, Team Guidelines and Goals.
2. Participate in the Lending Committee review process as an active, prepared, and knowledgeable member.
3. Participate in the ALCO Committee process as an active, prepared, and knowledgeable member.
4. Serve as backup for Consumer, AG and Mortgage lending officer(s) when needed.
5. Represent the bank in various community and civic organizations to enhance the bank’s image and develop additional business.
6. Understand the policies that relate to Lending and Asset Liability Management.

Formal Education & Licensure/certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance and/or 4 years equivalent work experience
